The collection consists of materials by or about Thomas D. Mutter, M.D. and the Mutter Museum from 1841-1884. The materials include addresses (1841-1851) given to Jefferson students (consisting of introductory lectures and charges to graduates), publications of syllabi for Jefferson courses (many interleaved with student notes), and two memoirs (1859) of Mutter, one written by R.J. Levis and the other by Joseph Pancoast.

A review of Thomas Jefferson University's current educational programs by comparing them against the extra-institutional criteria of the 1971 report of the Carnegie Commission on Higher Education entitled "Higher Education and the Nation's Health: Policies for Medical and Dental Education." Herbut reviews the report's recommendations for medical education and also advocates the establishment of a college of dentistry at Jefferson.
This collection includes information by or about Thomas McCrae and his brother John McCrae. The bulk of the collection consists of Thomas McCrae's publications, although it does also include biographical material, two addresses, correspondence, manuscript writings, news clippings, and ephemera. The material related to John McCrae includes several of his medical publications, photocopies of several of his poems, and a memoir.

Topics include "Transition of Adenomas into Carcinomas of the Mammary Gland," influenza and bronchopneumonia epidemics at the Easton Hospital, and bacteriology.
