The collection consists of material by or about William Earl Biddle, dating to the 1950s. The bulk of the collection consists of book manuscripts with handwritten corrections although it also includes some correspondence and notes.
William Earl Biddle (1906-1977) received his Bachelor of Science degree from Saint Joseph’s College in Philadelphia before graduating from Jefferson Medical College in 1935. He spent nearly forty years working as a psychiatrist in the Pennsylvania state hospital system, eventually becoming the clinical director at Philadelphia State Hospital, Byberry and heading the Department of Religious Affairs until his retirement in 1973. Throughout his career, he testified in many state court cases, including the first case to award workmen’s compensation for a mental disorder caused by a workplace accident.
Biddle was a member of the American Medical Association, the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis, and the Pennsylvania Psychiatric Association. His books include: Introduction to Psychiatry (1943, co-authored by Mildred VanSickel) and Hypnoses in the Psychoses (1967).
