The bulk of this collection consists of student notes from Stewart's time at Jefferson Medical College and the University of Pennsylvania. There are also notes from his time working in the University of Pennsylvania Lab of Hygiene. The notes and notebooks are organized chronologically when possible, otherwise alphabetically by subject. There are also patient records from Stewart's time at Blockley Hospital, publications by other authors, laboratory correspondence, and several ephemera.
Alonzo Hamilton Stewart (1867-1955) was born in Greensburg, PA on June 28, 1867, to a familyof Scotch descent. His parents were John W. and Frances M. (Boice) Stewart. He attended his home town’s schools in his early life, graduating from Greensburg High School in 1885. Afterward, Stewart studied at the Greensburg Seminary and the Indiana NormalSchool before deciding to pursue medicine. He obtained his M.D. from Jefferson Medical College in 1892. Later, Stewart attended the University of Pennsylvania, graduating with a Doctorate of Public Hygiene in 1913 and an A.B. in 1916.
Stewart worked at the Philadelphia Lying-In Charity Hospital while attending Jefferson. From 1892-1894, he was a resident physician at the Philadelphia Hospital. From 1894-1896, he was a Demonstrator of Clinical Microscopy at Jefferson Medical College and an Assistant Demonstrator of Clinical Medicine. In 1895, Stewart began working as a bacteriologist for the Philadelphia Bureau of Health, and as an Adjunct Professor of Bacteriologyat the Philadelphia Polyclinic and College for Graduate Medicine. At the Bureau, he was in charge of the Bacteriological Laboratory. At the same time, he had a practice at 252 North 12th Street in Philadelphia.
During his medical career, Stewart developed a number of medical devices and surgical instruments, including: cover-slip forceps, slide lifter and holder, milk sedimenter, and formaldehyde disinfecting apparatus. His most notable written work was Bacteriology of Milk. He was a member of the Philadelphia County Medical Society and the Pathological Society of Philadelphia. Alonzo Hamilton Stewart died in February of 1955, at the age of eighty-eight.
