This collection contains material by or about Jacob Parsons Schaeffer, except for the reprinted publications from other authors. The bulk of the collection consists of Schaeffer's journal articles. It also includes biographical material, addresses, images, event programs, and news clippings.
Jacob Parsons Schaeffer (1878-1970) earned his A.B. in 1897 at Central Pennsylvania College; his B.E. and M.E. at Keystone State Normal School in 1901 and 1903 respectively; his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1907; and his A.M. and Ph.D. from Cornell in 1909 and 1910. In 1912 Schaeffer became Professor of Anatomy at Yale, and in 1914 he came to Jefferson as Professor of Anatomy and the Director of the Daniel Baugh Institute of Anatomy of the Jefferson Medical College. His main research was the development and anatomy of the nasal sinuses, but during his career he also became a pioneer in diabetes research. Schaeffer taught at the Jefferson Medical College for thirty-four years before retiring in 1948. During and after his teaching career, Schaeffer was active in a variety of medical groups and associations. A few of his roles included being President of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia, President of the American Association of Anatomists, and Executive Secretary of the Anatomical Board of Pennsylvania. Schaeffer died in 1970.
