The bulk of this collection consists of Rehfuss's publications. It also contains class notes donated by Dr. Burchard E. Wright (JMC 1932), several letters of correspondence, biographical material, and a stamp of Rehfuss's name.
The gastroenterologist Martin Emil Rehfuss was born August 8, 1887 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1909 with a degree in medicine, and completed his internship from 1910-1911 at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital. Rehfuss spent the following three years in Europe, working at the American Hospital in Paris and studying esophagoscopy and intestinal diseases in Germany. Upon returning to the U.S. in 1914 he began teaching at Jefferson Medical College. He would remain there until 1962, partially retiring in 1956 and continuing on as Professor Emeritus. Rehfuss is known for inventing the Rehfuss drainage tube in 1913. He also served as a Captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps during WWI. He died July 29, 1964.
