This collection consists of a 1975 curriculum vitae; several publications, two in Japanese; correspondence from Jo Ono and from his wife Kimi Ono; and a 1918 letter from William Osler to Chevalier Jackson
Jo Ono (1898-1988) was born on February 8, 1898 in Fukushima, Japan. He moved to the United States in 1914. Ono completed his premedical education at Lafayette College, graduating in 1924, before earning his M.D. from Jefferson Medical College in 1928. As a Jefferson Student, he was a member of Kappa Beta Phi, the Edward L. Bauer Pediatric Society, and the Frank C. Knowles Dermatological Society. After graduation, he remained at Jefferson until 1930 for his internship. He worked as a physician at Mont Alto State Sanatorium in Pennsylvania until 1932.
Ono acquired additional training under Louis H. Clerf and Chevalier Jackson. He moved back to Japan in 1934 and worked as a bronchoscopist at St. Luke’s International Hospital in Tokyo. In 1947, he earned his Doctor of Medical Science degree. Ono was appointed Visiting Professor of Bronchoesophagology at Keio University in Tokyo in 1948 and founded the Japan Bronchoesophagological Society in 1949. Jo Ono died on January 17, 1988, at the age of 89.
