This collection contains the speech Meigs gave at his high school graduation, "The Destination of Philosophy;" several valedictory addresses; information on the Meigs Medical Association; and several memoirs.
James Aitken Meigs was born July 31, 1829 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Jefferson Medical College in 1851 with an interest in physiology. In addition to practicing medicine, Meigs also studied at the College of Physicians and the Academy of Natural Sciences. In 1854 Meigs became Professor of Climatology and Physiology at the Franklin Institute. He returned to Jefferson in 1866 as a summer Lecturer and in 1868 as the Chair of the Institutes of Medicine and Medical Jurisprudence. He died on April 20, 1880 of blood poisoning.
