Scope and Contents

This collection consists of material by and about Edward L. Bauer and his wife. The largest component of Edward Bauer's material is the Publications section. However, there are also day books from 1959 and 1960, addresses, news clippings, and biographical materials. Items from Mrs. Edward Bauer include addresses, radio interviews, and one published pamphlet.

Biographical / Historical

Edward L. Bauer graduated from Jefferson Medical College in 1914. He served in the army during WWI, and in 1918 he was appointed as the Philadelphia Department of Public Health's immunologist. In his fourteen years holding this position, he virtually eradicated diphtheria outbreaks in the city. Bauer also taught at the University of Pennsylvania before becoming a professor of pediatrics at Jefferson Medical College in 1926. He held this position for thirty five years. Throughout his career, Bauer was a member of multiple medical associations, wrote more than 300 articles on children's diseases, authored several books, and served as the director of health services at Girard College. He died on February 13, 1976.
