Biographical / Historical
Carlos Juan Finlay was born in Cuba on December 3, 1833. During his youth he spent his time between Cuba and France, where he was schooled. He enrolled in Jefferson Medical College in 1853; while there he studied under John Kearsley Mitchell and became friends with S. Weir Mitchell. After Finlay graduated in 1855 he returned to Cuba to start a general practice. In 1879 he was appointed to work with the United States Commission to Study Yellow Fever, and in 1881 he argued that mosquitos were the agents responsible for transmitting yellow fever. Finlay retired in 1908. He died August 20, 1915.
