The bulk of the collection consists of materials related to Ellis' work in Siam from the 1920s to the 1930s. There are also a few items related to Jefferson Medical College such as Ellis' class president graduation speech, reunion pamphlets, and 1910 recommendation letter from J.W. Holland.
Aller Gustin Ellis (1868-1953) was born in 1868. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Geneva College in 1894. In 1900, he graduated from Jefferson Medical College. Ellis divided his career between Jefferson and various appointments in Bangkok, Thailand (formerly Siam).
Ellis began his career at Jefferson as an Associate Professor of Pathology and was later appointed full Professor of Pathology. In Bangkok, he served as the Director of Pathology at the Royal Medical College (later part of Mahidol University). Ellis resigned this position in 1921 to return to the United States and accept another teaching position at Jefferson Medical College. This appointment was not renewed, and Ellis returned to Thailand in 1923. There, he accepted a five-year appointment as Visiting Professor of Pathology and Director of Studies at Chulalankarana University. By 1924, Ellis had become Dean of the university, and in 1926, he was appointed Dean and Director of the Siriraj Hospital in Bangkok.
Also in 1926, Ellis published Elements of Pathology (a second edition followed in 1945). He stayed in Thailand until his retirement in 1939. Upon his return to the United States. Ellis settled in Denver, CO. Aller G. Ellis died in Plainfield, NJ on February 19, 1953, of arteriosclerosis.
