Series
Scope and Contents
The 34 volumes of documents and personal papers of Dr. Herbut’s presidential papers are bound chronologically, beginning with his years as a pathologist, pathology textbook author, and cancer researcher from the 1940s to the 1960s, and continuing with his presidency of Jefferson Medical College and Hospital beginning in 1966, his reorganization and expansion of Jefferson to create Thomas Jefferson University in 1969, and his seven years as the university’s first president from 1969 until his death in 1976. The last volume includes material related to the aftermath of his death.
The volumes, each of which include a general list of contents, are organized by date and around specific subject areas. Subject headings were created by Dr. Herbut and are found listed in the Table of Contents at the beginning of each volume.
