Scope and Contents

The calling cards bear handwritten messages for the purpose of allowing medical students to gain admission to the library of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. Cards were to be presented to Mr. Fisher, Librarian. Faculty whose cards are included in the collection include W. W. Keen, [J. Chalmers?] Da Costa, Lawrence Wolff, William Pepper, and John B. Roberts.

This collection contains material related to Scheffey's interest and research into medical history as well as correspondence (bulk 1920s-1950s), newspaper clippings, ephemera, diplomas and certificates, and photographs. The Albert Whitely Papers (MS 052) also contain student notes and tickets originally in this collection.

The notes document the book's successive ownership by John Groome, George McClellan, J. W. Mintzer, Samuel D. Gross, E. J. Groom, Samuel W. Gross, A. Haller Gross and John Chalmers Da Costa. The first is a quiz on the anatomy of the leg from a physiology recitation session held by Dr. Lucius Tuttle; the second is a quiz on cardiac functions given by Dr. John Chalmers Da Costa, May 6, 1915. Appended to the latter are Druffner's notes on hygiene lectures given by Dr. Randle Rosenberger, Jan. 1915.
